No Parking On The Dance Floor Part II

The first week of school has come and gone.  All the kids are happy to see friends, get a locker (unless you are 6' 2" and get a lower locker, sorry BT), blah blah blah.  The newness of being back to school will wear off by the end of the month and kids will start the countdown to Christmas Winter break.

With construction in full swing at Dunwoody High School, parking for students, teachers, and construction workers is at a premium.  Signs have popped up, blocking off parking to students.  Of course the students should have the same access to parking on public streets as do teachers, construction workers, and any other person.  I know DeKalb County can restrict parking on its property.  On school property I feel that the school needs spaces for teachers and staff first, students last.

But who owns/controls the street in front of Dunwoody High School?  Does DeKalb Schools control it or does the City of Dunwoody?

At least one student has expressed her dismay at the parking situation, complaining that local residents are being rude.  She tells of how a nasty note was left on her car windshield.  Read about it over at King John's blog.  Even a Facebook page was created on this issue.

It's been less than three weeks since I posted the Midnight Star video, but here it is again - back by popular demand

I know, some of you are surprised to hear that some of the people living around Vanderlyn are not being kind to fellow residents, high school kids at that.  It was quite a shock to me as well.  Never would I expect the NIMBY attitude from people living in Dunwoody.  I thought they would be sympathetic toward the high school kids.  Perhaps even help these new drivers parallel park.  Remind them to keep the proper distance from curbs and fire hydrants.  Nope.  Simply a note threatening to call Dunwoody Police and report the car as abandoned.  Nice. 

It's OK for parents to park in spots to run in to Vanderlyn, but not OK for students to park on the same street, according to some residents.  A little news for those folks - the high school kids can legally (and should) park on those streets around the school (that are not posted otherwise). 

It's noisy living near an airport, it's smelly living near a landfill, and you'll have lots of traffic if you live near a school.  As local real estate guy Bob F knows, it's all about location, location, location.

Hopefully our police chief will provide some clarification to this issue.  The Dunwoody PD is doing an excellent job of keeping traffic flowing in the area. 

Chili Cook Off

In conjunction with the upcoming Dunwoody Music Festival, the Dunwoody Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Chili Cook Off. Cash prizes awarded.

Two categories: 1. pro  2. backyard

I'll be competing in the backyard category. My pepper plants are producing like crazy now after a liberal dose of organic fertilizer from Farmer D.  My recipe was handed down to me (handed down a flight of stairs that is).  The High King of Ireland, while guiding my ancestors' Clan, had royal input on this special Irish Chili. I'll be dishing out samples to the Irish, Scottish, German, Slovaks, and more. Simply stop by and see me at Dunwoody's Brook Run Park on October 23rd and see me hoist the $1000 check high in the air after the votes are counted.

Not sure where the 'pro' cookers will come from. That guy over at Mudcatz is a great chef so hopefully he'll enter.  Maybe someone from the Tavern or the guy from My Friend's Place. 

But don't be deterred; there are four prizes in all for the back-yard participants. The Chamber needs folks to sign up and compete. They are looking for Sustainable Chili, Chicken Whisperer Chili, SixCarsIn MyDriveway Chili, and Grogan's heroes Chili. How about FarmHouser Chili? I bet that would make your tummy warm on a Saturday in October.

Farmer Bob is supposed to help me out, but no confirmation yet. He's great at stirring the pot. I may need to call on Jill and Angr. Al to help me out if i don't hear from Farmer Bob. I hope to see Warren set up a table and enter, perhaps with Chief Grogan.

I heard negotiations are in the works for the Dunking Tank to be present for the event.  It may be a little chilly (and chili) that day, but no worries.  Some of you may recall the Dunking Tank idea from back in the spring.  See here for the details.
